At the hospital, Susan and Ross argue over ice chips, while Rachel is enamoured by Dr Franzblau. Joey talks to a pregnant woman (Lydia) while watching basketball, who starts going into labour. Joey has never been present at a birth before, but he's the only one there so has to take charge himself. Phoebe sings The Baby Song, and Ross pays her to stop. Monica wants her own baby, and Chandler makes a mistake by offering to have one with her if they're both not married when they reach forty. Rachel appears in a new set of clothes to impress the handsome doctor. A midwife turns up to help Lydia and Joey. Carol orders Ross and Susan out of the room beacause they won't stop arguing, and they end up trapped in a janitor's cupboard with Phoebe. Susan wants them back, and meanwhile the doctor is busy chatting up Rachel. Chandler comforts Monica after her mother upsets her. Joey goes back to Lydia's room with balloons, but her husband has turned up, so he leaves them outside the door. Phoebe's valiant escape attempt from the cupboard is made unnecessary when someone opens the door from the outside. Everyone who isn't an ex-husband or lesbian life partner is ordered out of the room where Carol is about to give birth. The baby is born, and Carol, Susan and Ross agree to name him Ben.
