It's Christmas: Monica and Rachel are givng cookies as presents claiming that it's a more personal gift, but it's really because they're poor. Ross buys presents- a slinky for Rachel, and a picture frame which Phoebe claims contains a picture of her father. She goes to see her grandmother who admits that it's just the man who came with the frame, and that her real father, who is actually not a famous tree surgeon, actually lives in a neighbouring state. Rachel makes a negative list about Ross, particularly mentioning his hair and his lack of initiative (the whole knowing her for a year and not asking her out thing). The mailman didn't like his cookies. Phoebe's grandmother gives Phoebe her father's address because she is so desperate to see him, and Phoebe drives to see him on Christmas Eve in a cab, picking up Chandler and Joey, who haven't yet done their Christmas shopping, on the way. Back at the flat, Ross breaks the radiator knob so it can't be turned off, and the heat starts to increase. Phoebe is too scared to see her father, in case he's not like she hopes he'll be. Rachel and Monica's Christmas party has a theme- "live like bacon". Mr Treeger, who runs the apartments, turns up, and Ross, stung by Rachel's remarks that he doesn't "seize the day", tries to bribe him to mend the radiator. After the party Phoebe, Joey and Chandler get back and Joey annoyingly mends the radiator immediately.
end credits: Joey and Chandler give out their ultra-cheap and tacky Christmas presents, purchased at a petrol station.
