Ross turns up with a monkey called Marcel that someone rescued from a lab. A pact is made that no one have dates on New Year's Eve because no one wants to be the only one with no one to kiss at midnight. Two men interrupt Phoebe's performance in Central Perk and she's angry until she finds out they were discussing how beautiful she is. She starts going out with one of them, David, who is a physicist, and wants to break the New Year's Eve pact. But Chandler has already chickened out and asked Janice, Monica has asked Fun Bobby, Paolo is coming back from Rome for Rachel, and Joey has asked a single mother called Sandy from the store where he is working as one of Santa's elves, so Ross is going to be the only one without a date. Ross is having problems with Marcel as well, who's moody all the time but performs tricks for Chandler when he goes to Ross's flat to check on Marcel when Ross isn't there.
Phoebe finds out David has a chance to work in Minsk for three years with his colleague Max. Fun Bobby turns up to the New Year's Eve party in Monica and Rachel's flat, but his grandfather has just died so he's now Miserable Bobby. Joey's friend Sandy brings her two children with her. Janice thinks that because Chandler asked her to the party they're getting back together. Rachel comes back from the airport looking beat-up. She says Paolo missed his flight and some woman fought with her for a taxi and she hit her head. Phoebe convinces David to go to Minsk. As Sandy is with Max, Janice has stormed off, Fun Bobby is depressed, Paolo hasn't turned up and David has to leave, no one has anybody to kiss at midnight. Chandler demands that someone kiss him, so Joey does.
end credits Rachel still doesn't realise Ross loves her.
