Phoebe and Monica see an attractive man and when Monica distracts him, he is hit by a car and put into a coma. Chandler's mother, a successful novelist, is on tv and says she's coming to Manhattan. Paolo returns from Rome. Monica and Phoebe visit the man in hospital, and make-believe that when he wakes up he will be the perfect man. Ross is jealous of Rachel and Paolo, who seem to kiss each other on purpose when he is in the room. Chandler's mother turns, and they all go out to dinner, with Paolo. After seeing Paolo licking Rachel's hand, Ross gets very drunk and Nora Bing, who is fairly perceptive, says that he will end with Rachel, and compares Ross and Paolo to characters in her books. Then they kiss, just as Joey walks in to get to the toilet.
Rachel is inspired by Nora Bing and decides to write her own raunchy novel. Monica and Phoebe are competing over the coma guy, to see who can care for him the most. Ross tells Chandler that he kissed his mother and Chandler won't speak to Ross. Phoebe performs the coma guy song in Central Perk. The coma guy eventually wakes up and they see that he's just a normal bog-standard man, not like they'd been imagining. Chandler admonishes his mother for kissing Ross and for her general behaviour and treatment of him over the years. Afterwards he feels a lot better and is friends with Ross again.
