The Matrix

Spoon boy: Do not try and bend the spoon. That's impossible. Instead... only try to realize the truth.
Neo: What truth?
Spoon boy: You're an idiot.
Neo: There is no spoon?
Spoon boy: Huh? Yeah whatever. Then you'll see, that it is not the film that's crap, it is only yourself.

The Matrix borrows ideas from all over the place. It reminds me in places of many movies, particularly Men in Black (the agents), The Terminator (Neo has to save the world after a war with machines; Neo and Trinity take on a room full of security guards), Dark City (humans are living in an artificial world which can be externally altered without them knowing), Fallen (anybody can turn into an agent), and Beauty and The Beast (Neo comes back to life after Trinity says she loves him). Also some Buddhist ideas are used (know yourself; there is no spoon). But do we care? No. These movies may be more subtle but The Matrix is just brilliant, even if it is a bit long and we don't really learn anything about the characters. I mean kung fu and black leather ought to be enough for anyone.

Left: Trinity prepares to kick some serious ass. Or something. I think she should grow her hair longer.

Right: This is about the best shot in the movie. An agent has shot Neo in the leg and is standing over him gloating. Agent: "only human". Trinity: "dodge this". Bam, agent falls out of shot in extreme slow motion. This scene is only bettered by the one right at the end, where Neo fights Agent Smith, who is getting increasingly desperate, with one hand behind his back.
