Rachel's fiancé, whom she left at the altar because he looked like Mr Potato Head. In refusing to marry Barry, Rachel cut herself off from her old friends and her parents, and started a new life sharing a flat with Monica. It was a passionless relationship with Barry, something she makes up for with Paolo, and with Barry as well (episode 1.20) Ross is about to ask Rachel out in episode 1.7 when a cat jumps on him and ruins the moment. The cat belongs to tall, dark, handsome Italian guy Paolo. When the lights come back on after the blackout Rachel is kissing Paolo. It's more a fling than a serious relationship, but Rachel thinks it is more than this for a while until Paolo hits on Phoebe in her massage parlour in episode 1.12. Rachel met Carl at Central Perk, and when they're on the balcony a few days after Chandler let slip that Ross loves her, Rachel starts daydreaming about Ross and rushes to the airport to meet his flight, abandoning Carl (who's really boring anyway).
