Fight Club (1999)

This movie is brilliant. Easily the best of the year. It might not be to everyone's taste, it's violent but it's not about violence specifically, and is very funny in places. The performances for the most part are immaculate, and then you have Edward Norton, who is literally breathtaking. With every movie he's in he further cements his position as one of the best actors around. Fight Club is directed by David Fincher, who also directed Se7en and The Game. The only tragic thing about Fight Club is that I don't think it will receive the attention it deserves, partly because people may be put off by thinking it's about boxing and partly because after years of watching soaps and being force-fed Hollywood blockbusters many people are just too cloth-eared to appreciate it. But it's one of those movies like Pulp Fiction, anyone who isn't bowled over, amazed and shocked by it just doesn't get it. For me Fight Club is a shining example of why movies are so important, and why I go to see them.
