The Passion of the Christ (2004)

I finally saw this "film" yesterday after weeks of watching with amusement as it destroyed box office records in America. I had some serious doubts as to whether it would be worth viewing, but hey, 300 Christians can't be wrong, can they? Well, it seems they can. Despite somewhat bravely risking his moeny and reputation on this move (previous Christ movies haven't exactly performed miracles at the box office), Mel Gibson deserves to be crucified for the end result.

It's a simple tale of a man called Jesus who's tortured to death by the Romans. Now quite what a Mexican guy was doing in Jerusalem is not explained. Also I really can't see why we're supposed to care about this one man. The Romans killed quite a lot of people at the time.. The depiction of torture and death here is needlessly violent, so much so that I thought I was watching on of the Hellraiser movies.

(no stars)

The Players:

Jim Caviezel as Jesus Christ
Monica Belluci as some random woman who was never identified. (May in fact be mentioned in some 2000 year old text)
Maia Morgenstern as Mary
and an assortment of cheap as dirt and just as talented actors, with the notable exception of that Pontius Pilate dude.
