The Pledge (2001)

I should have known when Jack Nicholson appeared on screen gibbering like an imbecile to himself that this was going to be a sub-par movie. If I'd known how much worse it was going to get I would have run screaming from the cinema. Unfortunately I stayed and by the end I was reduced to a gibbering imbecile myself. All I can say is that it's extremely odd, and not in a good way. It seemed to be more like some strange experiment than a movie, and is crammed with implausibilities and ludicrous events. The director Sean Penn should stick to acting, or failing that should commit suicide immediately as recompense for what he's done to my frail sanity.

(no stars)

The Players:

Jack Nicholson as some fat bloke
Patricia Clarkson as Margaret Larsen
Robin Wright Penn (alarm bells) as Lori
