He has been in love with Rachel virtually since high school, but Rachel thought of him then as Monica's geeky older brother and throughout season 1 she just sees him as a friend, and his attempts to ask her out are hamstrung by Paolo and his cat, and his own shyness. Ross was married to Carol for seven years before finding out she was a lesbian.
When they all went out to dinner, Ross became very jealous of Paolo licking Rachel's hand, had a lot to drink himself and ended up kissing Chandler's mother. Ross goes on his first date in nine years with Kristen, who lives in his apartment block and borrowed an egg from him. They go out to dinner, but Carol and Susan turn up to the same restaurant and when Susan is called away Carol joins them. Ross and Carol talk so much to each other that Kristen gets fed up and leaves. Celia is the curator of the insect department of Ross's museum. She is terrified of Marcel, and wants Ross to talk dirty to her. He gets lessons from Joey and concocts an elaborate fantasy for her but by the time he's through they're both too worn out for sex. Ross meets Julie in China, where he has gone to sort out a "big bone thing". Before he went, Chandler convinced him that he should stop dreaming of Rachel and move on, so he does, but meanwhile Rachel has found out that Ross loves her and realises that she has feelings for him, so Julie is not exactly Rachel's favourite person when she and Ross get back. In episode 2.20 Ross tells Rachel that he thinks Emily would be a good name for their daughter. Coincidence?
